Aeollanthus subacaulis habitat: The vegetation of the Nyika-Plateau in N Malawi is dominated by rolling grassland with interspersed islands of afromontane forests and rocks outcrops (Malawi, Nyika-Plateau, Chelinda Peak, 30.03.1991).
The rock outcrops represent edaphical arid microniches within a humid surrounding and inhabited by many succulents such as Aloe mzimbana (leaf tips lower right).
Aeollanthus subacaulis var. linearis (with narrow linear leaves) inhabits rock outcrops, whereas Aeollanthus subacaulis var. subacaulis (with broader leaves) grows among grasses in the grasslands.
